Fashion and color

Either it’s a casual or a formal wear, colors are essential to fashion’s compatibility and finesse.

Most people are scared of colors, they are intimidated by the idea of wearing what may or may not suit but colors can be timeless, for example with a green top, mustard and brighter shades of blue will lift your entire outfit

The black color with the feature of sophistication attached to it sets a different mood, you can wear a black cloth and be seen as formal, sophisticated and so on while it means a different thing when the same color is being used at funeral, yes! Colors are mood setters. Imagine what goes through your mind as a man when you meet a lady you are having a dinner date with in a red gown, I leave you with your thoughts as you struggle to unravel what you see and what you are planning to say. Colors can tell us if you are sad, happy or confused, you are surprised I said confused yes, you can be confused while combining color, the inability to combine colors makes you look like a typical masquerade.

Color theory is a set of guidelines for mixing and choosing and manipulating colors, theory includes ideas like

  • Color harmony: color harmony describes color pairings that are visually pleasing and provides a sense of visual orders but it’s quite important to know that humans responds to colors depending on personal preference and life experiences, there are no universally ‘right’ colors for achieving harmony
  • Color temperature: color temperature deals with breaking down colors into warm colors, these colors are associated with sunlight and daylight and cool colors (associated with overcast light), combining warm colors and cool colors can help you in choosing the right color to achieve a particular look
  • Color context:  colors appear to behave differently when viewed in different contexts, for instance, a rusty orange may seem dull when placed beside a vivid yellow but when paired with dark purple, the orange appears brighter.

In order to avoid being confused and be intentional about your colors here are some tips below to help you

  1. Start with analogous colors, these are colors that are next to each other for example light blue, on the color wheel its falls between teal blue and blue-violet so adding this together will give a subtle color palette.
  2. Use complementary colors, complementary colors are opposite each other on the color wheel and make a beautiful pairing, e.g. fuchsia and chartreuse. Burgundy and forest green, when you make bold color choices, both colors stand out
  3. Wear denim as neutral colors
  4. Mix neutral colors; neutral colors like brown, black, navy blue, and white almost always pair well, so don’t be afraid to wear black pants on brown shoes
  5. Wear accessories that don’t match unless you are going for a full monochrome look, don’t worry about your belt not matching to your handbags and shoes, these smaller accessories are actually a great place to experiment with bright colors.
